Be Family Fit!

When it comes to health, it’s important that we not only think of our own fitness but also that of our little ones. Experts advise that regular physical activity during childhood helps regulate body fat and form healthy behaviors that reduce risks associated with obesity and chronic diseases. Healthy, physically active kids are also more likely to be academically motivated, alert, successful and be able to build self-esteem at every age.

Children of active parents are much more likely to be more active as they grow. They learn by example – so making physical activity a part of your daily routine together is not only fun, but it also teaches them great habits that will develop for a lifetime.

IMG_1469Toddlers between 12 – 36 months should get at least 30 minutes of structured physical activity (adult-led) and at least 60 minutes of unstructured physical activity (free play) every day. And they shouldn’t be inactive for more than 1 hour at a time, except when sleeping.

A young child is naturally active, so why not build on their experiences by joining in on the fun! Here are some active games and ideas you might want to try with your little ones:

Twister: Turn, balance and twist with your child while you reach for different colors on the mat. If you don’t have the game just tape different colored paper to the floor and call out different actions…..right hand on yellow paper, left foot on blue.. etc.

Balloon Volley Ball: Try to keep a balloon up in the air as long as you can by using your hand. Each player hits the balloon just once. Watch out for the furniture.

Simon Says: A great ‘copy the action’ game – 1 person is “Simon” and gives action instructions like, “Simon says jump in the air” or “Simon says run on the spot”. If the action is not preceded by Simon Says, the players should not do the action. If anyone does the action when there is no Simon Says, they must do a burpee or push up or jumping jack or maybe just a little jump in the air.

Charades: Write down different animal names or draw images on a piece of paper and place in a bowl. Each player must pull out a piece of paper and imitate that animal moving – try to guess what it is.

Simple Catch: Throw a ball with your little one – teach them to place their hands together to catch and how to throw to a target. Each time move a little further away. Or do high five jumps for every catch!

Enjoy the fun!
