The Heat is On

summerSummer is here!  And as the weather warms up, it’s important to take some precautions to ensure you and baby are comfortable and safe while you exercise in the outdoors. Here are some helpful preparation tips:

1. Stay Hydrated – Water helps regulate heat through sweat to cool the body. It also keeps your organs working properly. But make sure your child is hydrated as well. Keep water in your stroller for bub and encourage them to sip between sets too! As a rule of thumb, you should be drinking one 600ml bottle in the hour before class, one during and one after as well as water throughout the day.

2. Dress Light – As you get into your workout, your core temperature can increase and effect muscle contraction. Dress in light, moisture wicking clothes that breath. They’ll pull moisture away from your skin so you’ll feel cooler and be able to work harder. Wearing a hat to keep the hot sun off your head and face also helps. Dress baby in a soft cotton body suit or just nappies (ensure the pram is in the shade though).

3. Keep the Stroller Cool. UV shades are great for the stroller, but they can stop the air flow and cause baby to overheat. Using a light muslin cloth over the stroller and always parking in the shade will allow air to flow over bub and help cool them down. And pick bub up between sets when you can to allow the breeze to flow over their back. A stroller fan is a great idea too!

4. Always Wear Suncreen & Sunnies!! Protect you and your baby’s eyes and skin from our harmful UV rays. Baby sunscreen and sunnies are available at most pharmacies and a must in our hot weather.

It will take some planning, but the end result is a super, safe and social workout for mum and bub!
